چکیده

This paper constructs improved estimators of the means in the Gaussian saturated one-way layout with an ordinal factor. The least squares estimator for the mean vector in this saturated model is usually inadmissible. The hybrid shrinkage estimators of this paper exploit the possibility of slow variation in the dependence of the means on the ordered factor levels but do not assume it and respond well to faster variation if present. To motivate the development, candidate penalized least squares (PLS) estimators for the mean vector of a one-way layout are represented as shrinkage estimators relative to the penalty basis for the regression space. This canonical representation suggests further classes of candidate estimators for the unknown means: monotone shrinkage (MS) estimators or softthresholding (ST) estimators or, most generally, hybrid shrinkage (HS) estimators that combine the preceding two strategies. Adaptation selects the estimator within a candidate class that minimizes estimated risk. Under the Gaussian saturated one-way layout model, such adaptive estimators minimize risk asymptotically over the class of candidate estimators as the number of factor levels tends to infinity. Thereby, adaptive HS estimators asymptotically dominate adaptive MS and adaptive ST estimators as well as the least squares estimator. Local annihilators of polynomials, among them difference operators, generate penalty bases suitable for a range of numerical examples. In case studies, adaptive HS estimators recover high frequency details in the mean vector more reliably than PLS or MS estimators and low frequency details more reliably than ST estimators.

Improving Penalized Least Squares through Adaptive Selection of Penalty and Shrinkage

Estimation of the mean function in nonparametric regression is usefully separated into estimating the means at the observed factor levels—a one-way layout problem— and interpolation between the estimated means at adjacent factor levels. Candidate penalized least squares (PLS) estimators for the mean vector of a one-way layout are expressed as shrinkage estimators relative to an orthogonal regre...

Adaptive Estimation of Directional Trend

Consider a one-way layout with one directional observation per factor level. Each observed direction is a unit vector in R measured with random error. Information accompanying the measurements suggests that the mean directions, normalized to unit length, follow a trend: the factor levels are ordinal and mean directions at nearby factor levels may be close. Measured positions of the paleomagneti...

Adaptively Denoising Discrete Two-way Layouts

The two-way layout with ordinal or nominal factors is a fundamental data-type that is widespread in the sciences, engineering, and informatics. The unrestricted least squares estimator for the means of a two-way layout is usually inadmissible under quadratic loss and the model of homoscedastic independent Gaussian errors. In statistical practice, this least squares estimator may be modified by ...

Multiple Penalty Regression: Fitting and Extrapolating a Discrete Incomplete Multi-way Layout

The discrete multi-way layout is an abstract data-type associated with regression, experimental designs, digital images or videos, spatial statistics, gene or protein chips, and more. The factors influencing response can be nominal or ordinal. The observed factor level combinations are finitely discrete and often incomplete or irregularly spaced. This paper develops low risk biased estimators o...

Absolute Penalty and Shrinkage Estimation Strategies in Linear and Partially Linear Models

In this dissertation we studied asymptotic properties of shrinkage estimators, and compared their performance with absolute penalty estimators (APE) in linear and partially linear models (PLM). A robust shrinkage M-estimator is proposed for PLM, and asymptotic properties are investigated, both analytically and through simulation studies. In Chapter 2, we compared the performance of shrinkage an...
